Mine has finally died 13 months on along with many other owner's machine losing all recordings in the process. The Thomson DTI is an absolutley terrible piece of equipment. Too many glitches to list. Two words to describe this product 'absolute rubbish' Bad points were failed to find series links, missed the end off most programs even with the 5 minute before and after buffer and continually froze.

Really bad points stopped working after 5 months with corrupt HD and I lost all my programs. An amazingly bad product that has caught so many of us by the cheap price dont be fooled by its garbage… Read Full Review. It was struggling to find any series link, noisy fan box froze easy and audio and picture sync issues and the final straw unable to power on… Read Full Review.

Thomson DTI Easy to use and navigate menus, but others on the market are even easier. Very unreliable. I bought one for the lounge and one for my daughter's room. The Thomson makes use of a slightly enhanced guide that has programme information up to 14 days ahead. The downside to this is that if programmes are moved around these changes are less likely to be reflected on the guide. In practice this rarely happens though, and the extra week of guide data is handy if you're going on holiday.

Performance Picture quality from the DTI is good. The machine allows you to output an RGB signal over the Scart lead. This means you get the best possible colour reproduction on your TV. If you're a flat-panel user, you might lament the lack of HDMI output, but in practice if you invest in a good Scart lead, the picture looks decent. Sound was strong too, there are both analogue and digital audio outputs on the , so you can hook it up to your hi-fi, or go to town connecting it to your AV receiver.

There were also some films from the movie channel Picture Box. We were impressed by the series linking ability of this box. While this functionality is promised as part of the new Freeview Playback standard, we've yet to see many boxes that support it. The Thomson does, however -- even though it isn't Freeview Playback certified -- and it works like a dream.

The only real question mark about Anytime relates to the quality of the programmes selected for delivery to the Top Up TV Anytime box. The original Top Up service offered 11 extra TV channels available throughout the day — now all that you get is a selection of shows, not of your choosing, pushed to your box.

Software updates are sent automatically to your box over-the-air. To check your version number, go to the menu, go to Option 4 Setup and select Option 6 Help. Running a newer version? Let us know. You should get a screen that looks like: This gives a number of options, including fan speed, box temperature and smart card info. Do the following:. Update: Thanks to one TUTV user for pointing out that this apparently only applies if the box was under a 12 month contract and has defaulted.

It's still made by Thomson and looks almost identical to its predecessor, save for the logo on the right of the fascia that indicates its sole alteration - a GB hard disc. The rest is the same - a smart-looking fascia featuring a few operating buttons but still choosing not to sport a proper readout in favour of green and red LEDs. The remote is also unchanged, apeing Sky's tried-and-trusted effort very effectively, right down to the rubberised grip.

The day EPG is retained, displaying in grid form what's on nine channels at a time while a side-scrolling menu along the bottom lets you view what's available from channels on the Anytime on-demand service. You choose which channels you want to receive from an onscreen list and a selection of programming is downloaded to the box overnight around 2am you can't record during this time.

Day by day, you build up a library of shows to watch that can be viewed within a seven-day period before being automatically deleted.
